A salute to Chuck Lewis

Today IRW and the School of Communication at American University will honor Charles Lewis and his distinguished career. He retires from the faculty Dec. 31 and will remain at IRW as emeritus executive editor. Lewis, a tenured professor, joined the university in 2006 and created the Investigative Reporting Workshop in 2008. IRW began publishing in the spring of 2009.

Over the last 13 years, IRW has trained more than 220 young people and worked with dozens of legacy news organizations, including The Washington Post and PBS FRONTLINE, as well as nonprofit newsrooms. IRW’s in-depth reporting spans a wide range of topics, from immigration, policing and water issues to public health, with a lens on corporate and government accountability.

IRW’s sister site is Investigating Power, which showcases some of the most significant journalism produced over the last 50 years and features video interviews with many of those journalists.

Lewis is a national investigative journalist and founder of the award-winning Center for Public Integrity and the International Consortium of Investigative Journalists. He is a former ABC News and “60 Minutes” producer and the author of “935 Lies: The Future of Truth and the Decline of America’s Moral Integrity.”
