JournalismThe Investigative Reporting Workshop, an independent, nonprofit news organization based at the American University School of Communication in Washington, D.C., is looking for smart, engaged college students and recent graduates from around the country for internships in the summer of 2021. Depending on the operating status of American University, internships may be remote, in-person, or hybrid.
Positions include researchers, data journalists, videographers, graphic designers and web producers. Undergraduate and graduate students are welcome to apply. Preferred majors include journalism, communication, film, public policy, public health, history or economics. Former interns are now reporting or editing at The Washington Post, the Center for Public Integrity, The Louisville Courier-Journal, the Treasure Coast newspapers, the Island Packet and the St. Cloud Times Media. Former interns have also gone on to Colorado Public Radio and to FRONTLINE production teams.
IRW publishes in-depth stories about government and corporate accountability, on topics ranging widely from the environment and health to national security and the economy. IRW publishes original stories and also pairs students with experienced professional reporters and editors and co-publishes stories with mainstream media partners and other nonprofit news sites.
Partners include PBS FRONTLINE and The Washington Post.
The stipend for all positions is $20 an hour for 30 hours per week. Positions run from 7 to 10 weeks, with start dates varying, depending on the end date of an individual student’s spring semester.
All IRW internships typically end by early August. Housing and transportation are not provided.
