NPR series on public defenders, Al Jazeera reports from the border

Former Workshop intern Samantha Sunne writes today about the chronic under-funding of public defenders'offices around the country. This is the last in a series of stories by NPR reporters on court fees charged to defendants even when they can't pay. Sunne did her preliminary research while working for us one summer while she was an undergrad at the University of Missouri.
Catherine Rentz has been reporting in Texas for us for an upcoming immigration story. While there, she learned about a musicians' movement pushing for less border control in a remote area of West Texas. Several crossings were closed after Sept. 11, turning small Mexican villages into ghost towns, and this group is trying to turn that around. You can see her video tonight on Al Jazeera America.
Rentz recently joined The Baltimore Sun's investigative team.
