Mentoring the next generation

Our partnership with The Washington Post continues this summer under an ever-expanding model, as we pair our Workshop interns with several different investigative teams at the Post. These students are overseen by the Workshop's John Sullivan, our senior editor who is also a reporter at the Post.
Kaley Belval, a Workshop intern from Ithaca College, has spent the last month working with Post reporter Scott Higham on a story following up on his earlier project about International Relief and Development (IRD), a nonprofit organization in Arlington County, Va., and its use of restrictive nondisclosure agreements. IRD collected more than $1 billion in tax dollars for war-related humanitarian projects funded by the U.S. Agency for International Development.
The latest story, co-published today on the Workshop's website, chronicles the use of such agreements at other agencies and the growing fear of retaliation among employees who report fraud. "Scott is an incredible mentor and provided a wealth of opportunities for me to grow as a reporter," Belval said as she checked out additional sources who have come forward since the article was published.
Belval and other Workshop interns also are working with the Post's Metro desk this summer, and Belval reported from Washington's Folklife Festival last weekend.
