"Gideon's Army" follows the personal stories of three young public defenders in the Deep South challenging the assumptions that drive a criminal justice system strained to the breaking point. The film, which won an editing award at the 2013 Sundance Festival, will be screened on Oct. 17 at American University's Katzen Arts Center, 4440 Massachusetts Ave. NW, in Washington, D.C.
The program, which is free and open to the public, runs from 5:30 to 8 p.m. and includes a Q&A with the director, Dawn Porter, and experts in the field of the indigent defense system. The panel will be moderated by Kat Aaron of The Investigative Reporting Workshop. Aaron's most recent story on the courts focused on how they are addressing heavy caseloads and overpopulated jails.
The film is another in the 2013 Human Rights Film Series Program, sponsored by the Center for Media & Social Impact at American University.
