Tobacco companies pushing back

As countries around the world ramp up their fight to reduce smoking, free-trade agreements have become a weapon of choice for multinational tobacco companies seeking to challenge the most stringent rules. The Obama administration announced 15 months ago that it would push for language in a pending Pacific Rim trade deal protecting the authority of national health agencies, including the Food and Drug Administration, to impose tough anti-smoking measures. But facing strong opposition from powerful business groups and congressional delegations from tobacco states, the administration has so far failed to move forward with the proposal.

Lewis wraps up speaking tour in Australia

Workshop Executive Editor Charles Lewis wraps up his speaking tour in Australia Tuesday, when he will talk about Investigating Power at the University of Melbourne's Center for Advancing Journalism.
Earlier this month, Lewis spoke at the Byron Bay Writers' Festival, in Byron Bay, Australia, on the evolution of the investigative journalist, and also at the The Walkley Foundation Storyology Conference in Sydney, about maintaining journalistic excellence when working in a nonprofit newsroom.
He also spoke to 30 Sydney-based editors, news directors and executive producers at an annual meeting to discuss the entries in the national Walkley Awards competition. Journalists ...
Post-Workshop partnership continues

Today in The Washington Post, Alexia Campbell, the Investigative Reporting Workshop's Graduate Fellow, published her first investigative story. The story looks at how a city health program serving the elderly and disabled may have improperly cut them from the program, leaving some to fend for themselves.
Campbell highlights the case of Joyce McWain-Gray, 56, whose legs are paralyzed. McWain-Gray lost eight hours of care under the program, even though she was still eligible.
