Nonprofit news groups preserve those first drafts of history

Nonprofit online news organizations may eventually take over the community information function traditionally provided by newspapers, said Phil Meyer, an advisory board member for the Investigative Reporting Workshop.
In an interview with Sara Brown on the “Who Needs Newspapers?” website, Meyer said that if private enterprise will not be responsible for “preserving the first rough draft of history,” then charitable foundations would have to do it.
Meyer pointed to Executive Editor Charles Lewis’ new journalism ecosystem as a census of 60 nonprofits currently working in online media.

Turkish journalists explore investigative reporting feasability

Five Turkish journalists met with interns, reporters and Executive Editor Charles Lewis last week to discuss the role of investigative journalism in the U.S. media, continuing the Investigative Reporting Workshop's ongoing relationship with overseas journalists.
The five journalists represented print, online and broadcast media in Turkey:

Welcome to the new field of “journalitics”

I spent last week, along with more than 400 others, attending the National Institute of Computer-Assisted Reporting Conference in Raleigh, N.C. It was an invigorating and exciting time – the largest CAR conference in about a decade.
And I came away convinced that we are seeing the emergence of a new field, which I am going to call “journalitics,” that is, the combination of journalism with analytical tools. Those who practice it are not merely “journalists,” but rather, “journalysts.” And these new practitioners were on full display at the NICAR conference.
